Slade was a famous NHL player who is forced into early retirement due to a knee injury. He returns to his hometown where he runs into his high school sweetheart, Celina.

The book focuses mainly on Slade and Celina's relationship and their differences when it comes to a student, Jeremy's, hockey playing. Celina is head of the English department and believes in Jeremy's education, whereas Slade sees himself in the boy and believes hockey is in the boy's future.

Over time Slade realizes how much he was cheated out of an education during his school days. He can barely read and write and now that Hockey is over, he doesn't know what he's going to do. This leaves him questioning his relationship with Celina. I liked that the reader was told of his secret early on so we didn't have to wait till the end to find out with Celina.

Slade's fear at his secret getting out felt real, but I find it a little hard to believe that no one except those he told really noticed. The reader also didn't get to see his illiteracy in action, just a few stalling moments when he was given a paper and his internal struggle over his fear of Celina finding out.

The end was also a little disappointing. Slade asks Celina to teach him to read but we didn't get a chance to see what a touching moment her teaching him would be. We also didn't get to see the potential backlash when the press found out about his secret. It felt rushed.

The book was really good and kept me reading, but it was pretty average.

The return of Slade garner is about a hockey star who returns to his home town to recover from an injury that may stop him from playing hockey forever. while visiting his home town he runs into his old highschool sweetheart Celina who is now an english teacher who holds the schools chances for winning the hockey season in the palm of her hand . one of the teams star players is failing and she wont let him play unless he improves his grades. Which sparks the education vs. sports debate. with slade and celina one either side. But slades got a secret that he never wants celina to find out. This book was very good!
