Empress Matilda has always been one of those historical figures I haven’t had much sympathy for. She seemed to be her own worst enemy with her arrogance and lack of respect for even her highest supporters. If I had to choose between her and the affable Stephen, I’m not sure who I would have gone with either.Yet, Chadwick gives us a glimpse into this woman who strived so hard for a place in a male-dominated world and to give a future to her son. The author proves her characterization chops again with this one. Matilda is still the arrogant snot she was historically; however, we also get to see the strong-willed woman who isn’t respected for her intelligence, her maternal love for Henry, and a bit of her love and respect towards some very select individuals. Matilda is still hard to have sympathy for, but the reader gets a bit more of an understanding for her and where she comes from after reading this.
And then there’s also Chadwick’s excellent world-building skills and research power. The reader doesn’t just read about The Anarchy; they experience every sword blow, church chant, and whiff of Angevin sun. I can’t think of one work by Chadwick where such isn’t true. It was interesting to see this chaotic world and time come to life, from both the POV of the major power players like Matilda and Robert of Gloucester to the minor nobles like Brian FitzCount and Will of Arundel.
Another winner from Chadwick here! Great historical details and world-building combined with out-of-this-world characterization create another great novel by this author. I’d definitely recommend this one to any lover of Chadwick’s works or of historical fiction from the medieval era.

I love Chadwick’s work, so I picked up this book for my kindle. After reading the books on William Marshall by Chadwick (Place Beyond Courage and The Scarlet Lion), this really rounded out the story of King Henry's death and the battle for the crown between King Stephen and Empress Matilda. I highly recommend reading all 3 books, although whether you read this book or the books on William Marshall first doesn't matter.
This book is an inspiring story on both Empress Matilda, and Queen Adeliza. These were two very different women who reacted very differently to the rules and restrictions placed on them by medieval society. It's very engrossing, and is a great escapist book--it transports you into a whole different time with foreign customs, and strange ways of speaking and acting. The book has some slow moments, but overall kept me turning the pages, and staying up much to late each night reading. The struggles Empress Matilida and Queen Adeliza faced as women in the middle ages really put into perspective how far we've come as a culture in the last 800-900 years, and how the roles and responsibilities of both men and women have changed.
Lady of the English is the first and only book I've read by Elizabeth Chadwick. One of my friends, who is a huge fan of historical fiction, highly recommended this author to me. I found the story to be very interesting and historically accurate and I enjoyed learning more about the daughter and wife of Henry I (Empress Matilda and Queen Adeliza). It was nice to read a historical fiction book that highlighted two strong women and the friendship they shared. The reason I gave this a 3 star rating is I felt it was a very slow read. it just didn't hold my attention for any length of time and it took me a longer time than usual to get through all 545 pages. But, the jury is still out for me when it comes to Elizabeth Chadwick. Her reputation is so good that I feel I need to read another of her books and see how it compares with this one. If anyone who reads this review has a recommendation for me I would greatly appreciate you leaving me a comment.
This is very well-written history. If you ever wondered just who was that Matilda woman who vied for the throne against King Stephen and split England into warring factions in Brother Cadfael's day, you're curiosity will be hugely rewarded in this book. Matilda was the rightful heir to the English throne in an era when to be a ruling queen was considered impossible. She did eventually reign to a large degree through her son, the colorful and intelligent Henry the Second, who married another marvelous woman, Eleanor of Acquitaine, (yes, that Lion in Winter woman). These are just two of the She-Wolves whose life stories are very exciting reading. And this author does a damned good job! I had no idea I would get just a joyride out of this book. So glad I found it!
Elizabeth Chadwick is a wonderful writer who thoroughly researches her characters and their historic settings. These medieval histories are fascinating to me, in part because she's writing about my ancestral great-grandparents. What an amazing treat to be able to look back 900 years into the lives of my ancestors through Chadwick's perceptive eyes! Henry I, Matilda, Stephen, Geoffrey, Henry II, all were my ancestral great grandparents. Until I started researching my ancestry, I knew nothing about these people and their stories. Now I'm hooked, and Elizabeth Chadwick is a magnificent resource for discovering their lives and times. She brings the time and the people vividly to life. Matilda, and her relationship to her father and husband, fascinates me. She was a strong and capable woman, trusted and given power by her first husband, a Holy Roman Emperor; promised the crown but held back and held in check by father and her young and ambitious second husband; deprived of her rightful crown by her cousin Stephen. She remained resolute and with the help of her son, Henry II, who became the first of the Plantagenet kings, regained the crown of England for the family. Matilda's story speaks loud and clear to women today.
